Set against the awe-inspiring backdrop of the Himalayan ranges, the Valley of Flowers National Park offers visitors an enchanting and unforgettable experience. Spanning 87 square kilometers in Chamoli district, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the two core zones—alongside Nanda Devi National Park—of the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve.
The valley was reportedly discovered in 1931 when a group of three British mountaineers, led by Frank S. Smythe, accidentally stumbled upon this breathtaking area after losing their way. Captivated by its beauty, they aptly named it the “Valley of Flowers.”
True to its name, the Valley of Flowers is a vibrant paradise where nature flourishes in full splendor, offering a mesmerizing spectacle of over 600 exotic flower species, including orchids, poppies, primulas, marigolds, daisies, and anemones. The park is also dotted with sub-alpine forests of birch and rhododendron. The trek to the valley reveals stunning scenes of cascading waterfalls and rushing streams. Situated at an elevation of around 3,600 meters above sea level, the valley is home to an array of rare and fascinating wildlife, including the gray langur, flying squirrel, Himalayan weasel, black bear, red fox, lime butterfly, snow leopard, and Himalayan monal, among others.
